Am I liable for back tax on my van?

Am I liable for back tax on my van?

I purchased a van on 01-01-2021 and I just put it on the road, but I didn't fill in form before now about not using it. Will I have to back tax it from date of purchase? Also I'm using it to carry my father's walking aids (wheelchair, rollator and zimoframe); will I have to pay private use tax rate?

Answer

Hi Peter,

I’m afraid you are liable for the back tax. The rules on that are quite clear - the vehicle must be declared off the road ahead of time, not after.

In terms of the tax status, then yes, if the van is used for any private use whatsoever it must be taxed as such.
