Can I change ownership to avoid motor tax arrears?

My limited company ceased trading last year, with no debts owed. I retained the commercial SUV to use for my work. There are two years' tax owed on it. Can I change the ownership into my name and forego the arrears?

Hi Ray,

That’s an unusual one, as, if the vehicle was in the company name, and the company is dissolved, then the vehicle should already be owned by somebody else.

Regardless, it is true that, when a vehicle changes hands, the new owner is not liable for the motor tax arrears.

This is worth discussing with your accountant.
