I'm a community volunteer and have been asked for assistance. My "client" who is on a disability allowance bought a used van for private use. His insurance company insists he tax it as a commercial. The local tax office told him "No way without tax clearance." But he's not in business. The van is purely for personal non commercial use. What can he do?
Hi Ian,
This is a major problem in Ireland as there’s a massive disconnect between the two. Our understanding is that your client has to - according to Revenue - tax the van for private use. Insurance companies don’t seem to understand this so I suggest your client use a specialised broker to find a suitable policy for their needs.
