What are the VAT implications for a private purchase of say a new VW T6.1 Transporter Trendline, cost inclusive of VAT approx. €41,000.00? I am not VAT-registered and intend to resell the van in two years. When I sell it or trade it in, will the selling price include VAT, the same as it would for a private car sale or would the sell/trade-in value be excluding VAT, so that essentially I get hit twice for VAT?

Hi there,
It’s very simple. As a private buyer you can’t claim back the VAT paid on the initial purchase, just as if you were buying a regular car. When you come to sell the van or trade it in, it’s the same thing as selling or trading in a used car. The VAT is irrelevant to you at that stage as you’re selling a private vehicle and you are not VAT-registered.
